Halifax County Animal Shelter 54 Dogpound Road Halifax NC 27839 Phone 252-583-1050 Hours of Operation: Monday-Friday: 8:00am - 4:30pm Halifax County Animal Shelter is 15 miles south-east of Roanoke Rapids, NC - click here for directions What we do Animal Control Officers will pick up stray dogs and cats on public property or on private property when reported. If the animal has tags, every reasonable effort is made to contact the owner to come and pick up the animal at the shelter. It is County policy that the animal is to be held at the shelter for a minimum of one week. If the owner is not located the pet is offered for adoption or put to sleep. There is no leash law in Halifax County. Local municipalities may have stricter laws. Any animal running loose must not be a nuisance, and must have a current rabies tag attached to the collar. ID tags help locate owners. In some cases, wanted pets have been destroyed at the Shelter because the owner was identified too late. Make sure your dog has a tag with current information on it. Click here for information about microchips. Spay and neutering your pet also helps control the stray population. Please check with a veterinarian about these procedures. If you would like to adopt one of these dogs or can move it to a rescue please phone 252-583-1050 from 8:30am to 12:30pm Monday - Saturday. If the machine answers during those hours I am in the kennels and cannot hear the phone (too much barking) so please leave a message and I will call you back.
