Need something to do - take a dog for a walk!

Make a boring day more interesting for the animals at the Franklin County Animal Shelter by going to visit them to socialize and play. The shelter is always in need of volunteers to take dogs on walks and play with cats.

Dogs Needing Homes at Franklin County Animal Shelter Louisburg, NC

The Franklin County Humane Society and County citizens spent a great deal of effort and money to build a new shelter at a new address with different hours. With the tremendous influx of animals to county shelters, euthanasia has to occur, but with the help of many other groups and individuals, close to 1000 dogs and cats were saved in 2007. Franklin County really has improved its care of animals in county custody and deserves the credit.

Animals are kept as long as possible, not just the three days mandated by law for strays. Owner surrrenders are not euthanized immediately. Over five years ago the County moved to euthanizing by lethal injection performed by a licensed veterinarian and then only after the animal is first sedated.

Franklin County has a new, larger, and thoroughly modern shelter, built over three years ago, which is located at 351 T. Kemp Road, Louisburg, NC 27549. There are quarantine areas, separate areas for puppies, small dogs, kittens, larger dogs and cats. There are visitation rooms where potential adopters may take their new prospective family members to get to know them and a fenced in area for walking.

Contact Information
If you have a question about the status of any animals at the facility or need to retrieve a lost pet, call 919-496-3032 or Fax 919-496-4876 or e-mail dhoward@franklincountync.us

Rescues requiring assistance to remove a pet from the facility should call Dannie Howard on 919-496-3032 or e-mail dhoward@franklincountync.us. Animal Control has agreed to waive the deposit for approved rescues, although proof of spay/neuter must still be provided for rescued animals. Waivers will be granted based on the database we have developed, so if your rescue has not yet done so, please provide Dannie Howard at AC with a copy of your 501 (c) (3) and a vet reference. Addition to the database will be automatic as soon as the reference is checked. There will be a $5 rabies shot charge for any animal 4 months old and over. AC reserves the right to remove any rescue if the spay/neuter proofs are not provided or if they act inconsistently with the purpose of rescuing animals. You can also fax the information to 919-496-4876 attention Dannie.

PENNSYLVANIA RESCUES PLEASE NOTE: Our local Humane society, Franklin County Humane Society, has obtained a PA dealer’s license and is able to export dogs and cats to Pennsylvania.
